Agriculture has led Vista’s economy since its inception, and the city continues to be one of the San Diego County’s largest farming areas, however, commercial activity is growing. Employment opportunities in Vista are available in manufacturing, transportation, wholesale & retail trades and also the service industries, all of which continue to show an increase in the total number of jobs in the area. New retail development has spurred a 15% growth in retail sales. Food stores and a few new auto dealerships attributed to most of this gain. Retail services are the biggest driving force behind Vista’s economy. Many new retail plazas have opened up. Vista households had a median income of $39,771 in 1998.
Vista Village, a huge redevelopment project adjacent to old downtown Vista is expected to add some 300 new jobs and revitalize the downtown area.
